In addition to our first article on #CybersecurityInTourism, we would love to share with you some practical pieces of advice related to #VacationVulnerabilites.
By following these summarized cybersecurity tips, you can help protect your sensitive information while traveling, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience. Always keep yourself updated on the latest cybersecurity threats and best practices.
Take into consideration equally both:
- Physical safety &
- Virtual safety.
Protect the physical security of your devices-
- Don’t put them in your check-in baggage,
- Turn devices off when going though airport security checkpoints,
- Don’t assume your devices will be safe in your hotel room either,
- Use your own plug and cable to charge your devices, or a charged battery pack,
- Before you travel, back up important data from your devices to a secure external hard drive.
In addition to this, it is necessary to stay alert in crowded areas, where pickpockets and thieves may operate. Keep a close eye on your belongings and report your loss or any theft to the authorities as soon as possible.
It is good to follow these basic virtual safety tips, so you can enhance the security of your devices and reduce the risk of falling victim to cyber threats:
- Confirm that your antivirus software is up-to-date,
- Familiarize yourself with Digital information laws and regulations in other countries,
- Some devices do not work in specific geographical locations,
- Don’t have any expectation of data privacy on public Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or in internet cafes,
- Turn off automatic connections,
- Especially be cautious of QR codes,
- Clear your browser after every use (delete history files, caches, cookies…),
- Use secure payment methods,
- Be careful with social media (over)sharing.
You can enjoy your travels with greater peace of mind, knowing that you’ve taken steps to protect yourself in the digital landscape. #CyberSecurityAwareness is always necessary when you are on the go.
Happy travelling!
