One of the key components of cybersecurity in the modern digital age is media literacy, which, among other things, involves the ability to analyse, evaluate, and create information. Understanding how media function and the ability to critically approach information can significantly reduce the risk of cyber attacks, misinformation, and other forms of digital threats.
Recognising fake news and misinformation is one of the most important aspects of media literacy. False information is often used to manipulate public opinion, spread panic, or as a prelude to more complex cyber attacks, such as phishing attacks, where users are tricked into revealing their personal information. Individuals who are media literate are better equipped to identify unreliable sources and verify information before believing it or sharing it further.
Additionally, media literacy plays an important role in the protection of personal data in the online space. Awareness of how information can be collected, analysed, and used helps users take steps to protect their data. Moreover, media literacy promotes responsible behaviour online. Users who understand how information spreads and the potential consequences of their online activities tend to communicate more thoughtfully and carefully. This includes understanding the ethical aspects of digital communication, such as respecting copyright, avoiding hate speech, and preventing the spread of misinformation.
Ultimately, media literacy plays an important role in strengthening society’s resilience to cyber threats. Collective awareness and education about cybersecurity through media literacy can create an environment where users are not only more aware of potential threats but also actively contribute to the protection of the digital space.
Therefore, we conclude that media literacy is a necessary tool for strengthening cybersecurity in the modern world. Through critical thinking, conscious privacy management, and responsible online behaviour, individuals and society as a whole can better protect themselves and their data from numerous digital threats.
